Russia will target part of its missiles at the possible newly built U.S. defence shield facilities in the Czech Republic and Poland in the case of emergency, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.He also stressed that a crushing majority of Czech citizens are against the stationing of a radar base on Czech soil. "Who has asked the Czechs and Poles whether they want to have these [U.S. defence] systems in their countries? A crushing majority of Czech citizens are not enthusiastic about these plans," Putin told 1364 Russian and foreign journalist at his annual big press conference, which is the last for him as his second term in office expires in May. Putin again reiterated that the Russian general staff and experts claim the U.S. defence system threatens Russian security interests. The Untied States wants to build a radar base at the Brdy military district, some 90km southwest of Prague, and a base for ten interceptor missiles in Poland. It says the European elements of the U.S. missile shield will protect a big part of Europe and the United States from missiles that "rogue" states like Iran might launch. The Pentagon said recently it would be possible to conclude the agreement with the Czech Republic in the weeks to come. The Czech centre-right government favours the project, while the left opposition and 70 percent of Czech citizens are opposed to the base, according to public opinion polls.
